A Discussion On Voyeurs and White Men

A Discussion On Voyeurs And White Men

click here to download in Quicktime 7

Here's is my video response to sexism in the Vlogosphere that Modern Feminist discusses. First there is the Vloggercon Promo, to help get the word out on the conference (we are working very hard on it, so you should come and join the debate!) using parts of her video, then my abstracted response on how I see video voyeurism and the Control Of The Camera. Kinda. They were only concepts in the editing process; we all exploiting each other at various moments. This also stars Spec, the owner of Spec's Twelve Adler Museum Cafe. A very historic watering hole here in San Francisco.

This is turning into a house of mirrors! BTW, your link to Spec's produces an error.

I won't pretend I'm not a little confused, but I think I like it. Thanks for the response, Schlomo! See you soon.

I'm sorry WHAT'S CREATIVE about this response? I propose some intelligence...thru word, action or VLOGGIng...

Well, Julianne, creativity is subjective... or maybe just random, like your use of CAPS in your sentence.

At least I did something, you just comment with no link to your site. That's some mighty strong action on your part, Julliane! Congrats!

(I would have emailed this to you instead of putting it on my site, but you are not interested in communication, just making trouble. Which is fine if you are twelve.)

Whoa Schlo...
Hold up? What's the problem? Sure, creativity is subjective...forgive that....but where are the nietzche's, the bukowski's, the valie exports? I suppose I watched your vlog and felt only lower immediacy, both in modern feminisms rant and your minimalization of that. I just wish whatever people are thinking would be manifest as something more than a response. ..passive-agressive or not.

Jullianne,

I think you misinterpreted what I was saying in my comment above to you: You ask "where are the nietzche's, the bukowski's, the valie exports?" As you sit there waiting for one to show up instead of maybe creating your own thoughts "thru word, action or VLOGGIng.."

You "wish whatever people are thinking would be manifest as something more than a response", yet that is all you have done here-- just given a response on my oh-so-ill-conceived video.

You have not added anything to the conversation, which is disheartening, but instead told us all that you expect better from the internet from which you are consuming.

"Why aren't you smarter, you damn Internets!"

Anyway, looking forward to your video on the subject! If you don't have a videoblog, come to Vloggercon and we will help you make one. We are here to help you get your voice online and shared with the world!

Thank you for your offer to help me learn how to VLOG. I appreciate your offer. I am a 29 year old cultural producer who has taught editing, circuit board construction, programming, and critical studies while actively developing my own practice. It is our choice to participate in the socio-cultural structures we wish, in the way we wish. You have choosen to participate in the structure of the vloggosphere, a structure whose nature encourages comments and fosters various levels of anonymity, I'll bet to encourage active critique, create community and develop skills. I am merely calling for more critique. So how about that conversation.... let's talk about your video...in it you couch Modern Feminist's angry discussion of the golf hostess issue within a video of a woman teasing an older man. Modern Feminist's bit is re-contextualized thru distancing & minimalization of her video; the other woman's actions are ramped to accentuate her smirks etc.., and her _________(you fill in the blank) stupidity, sexuality perhaps? This is where your particular point of view becomes murky. Where is YOUR voice? Do you agree with Modern Feminist? Do you agree that the call was an example of 'hollywoodism'? Is the woman teasing the man in the deli/bar a friend? Do you find her flirtation offensive? Are you critiquing women's sexuality as a defense for the golf hostess call? I'm just unclear, which is fine, but I think you have to remember that medium is the message. What is your message? How does that effect your cultural production? I don't think your video is 'oh-so-ill-conceived' (your words) I just think there's more development to be done to unearth or foreground your meaning. Women are a fiery sexually charged bunch, this we most certainly are. ..what are your thoughts? How do you conceptualize your video?

Well, "Jullianne", with your Ooo la la comment, you have officially bored me.

To quote you, "I just wish whatever people are thinking would be manifest as something more than a response. ..passive-agressive or not." (served easy and digestable--just how you like it!)

Ooo La La. Yawn.

Don't be so defensive. I wait for your video. I am interested! I said I was and I wouldn't have maintained a dialogue this long if I wasn't. Make video! Also, my critique of your video had nothinbg to do with difficulty or indigestibility, but was meant to posit the question 'just what is the concept, the viewpoint or philosophical idea, are you asking us to digest?' Again, I felt it was kind of mushy or unformed...but I did ask you to clarify..as I certainly could be missing your point completely. Looking forward to your video Schlomo.

"Girls, girls, girls!!!", says Mrs. Garrett.

I went in halfsies on Nelson's latest upcoming Carp Video Digest or whatever the fuck it's called, and in researching and gathering materials, came across some excellent words about this creature called "woman", a particularly relevant one for this topic being:

"All men are tools. To use them you have to know their weaknesses."

Me tool, you girl. You want share fire?

That's not the same woman is it? It's confusing, like Mulholland Drive. I'd have to watch it again and pay attention to make sense of it. How long did it take you to make? Maybe that's how long I'll spend analyzing it.

Greetings,
As one of about five African American men in attendance at Vloggercon, I must report that I'm sorry I missed the digital divide episode.

Hey Zennie

I'm sorry that happened, but we are putting it online. We just need to do a little work to them before putting them up. Give us about a week.

So please check back to the site or subscribe to our RSS feed:

hope that helps!
